Great post - thanks for writing it.

I've heard the fenced playground analogy before, only with the added detail that the playground was on a roof. Heightens the stakes for the metaphor a little!

I couldn't agree more. Although I don't have children of my own, I used to be a teacher, and it was the children of parents such as yourself that made the job worthwhile and enjoyable. It was the children of parents such as you describe above that made me leave the profession crying and on the verge of a nervous breakdown after two years.

Incidentally, maybe I'm wrong, but don't you mean the opposite when you say "Actually, I’m a lot less concerned about how he’ll treat people later on than I am how he’ll dress or look. Even more-so, I hope that he will learn to resist injustice and learn to go his own way when he’s older."

Anyway, great post.

{{TjL writes: Oops, yeah, I changed the order of the sentence and forgot to change "less" to "more". Fixed, thanks!}}

Wow, it is like you are in my head! As a father of 2 boys, this is exactly why I DON'T let them act like this. Anybody that tells you that being a parent is easy, isn't involved enough in their kids lives. As a parent, I am NOT suppose to be my kids best friend, it is to teach/lead/mentor them.
thanks

Without a doubt, the most well-written and spot-on post I've read in ages. As a parent of three squirmy boys, I am literally *exhausted sometimes by the amount of time I have to spend every time we're in pubic monitoring and correcting their behavior -- but it doesn't mean I stop. Parents who don't mind their kids drive me insane for exactly the reasons you mentioned. Thanks for this post -- every parent should read it and some ought to get a clue.
